On August 12, a meeting of five members of the Salvemos Cala Mosca collective took place with the current mayor Carolina Gracia, the town planning councilor José Aix and a municipal technician. Topics related to the current state of the D-1 Alameda del Mar sector were discussed.
At the meeting, the main idea is clear for members of the mayor's office and the Save Cala Mosca association: from the town hall they will continue with the procedures to facilitate the building license. According to Carolina Gracia and José Aix: “we have an administrative responsibility and we have to comply with the law. The Ministry has given the green light and we must continue with the pertinent procedures”. An unconvincing response for the defenders of Cala Mosca, who reminded the City Council that they approved in plenary last September 2021 the specific modification of the plan when they had reports from the general secretary and the highway secretary.
From the association, the members have also made clear their position to continue fighting against urban speculation and preserve the last virgin km of the Orihuela Costa coastline. They have also emphasized the precarious services of Orihuela Costa. In how the quality of life on the coast has worsened vertiginously in recent years due to the saturation of the N-332, the poor condition of the streets and highways, the poor management of wastewater and garbage collection, the lack of personnel health, police and their respective infrastructures. And no less important, they have recalled that the administrative dispute that the Cambiemos Orihuela political group and the Ministry of Public Works itself have filed continues. The Government reiterated to both the Ministry and the City Council that the reports against the urbanization of Cala Mosca are binding and mandatory, after the general director of urban planning of the Valencian Community, Vicente J. García Nebot, dismissed its mandatory nature.
Faced with the arguments of the association regarding the precariousness of services on the coast, the members of the council recognized that this is a problem that has been dragging on for years and right now they are not enough to solve it. If they build, they admitted, they will have to study how to serve the families who live in 2,267 more homes.
Lastly, from the collective for the preservation of natural space, emphasis is placed on the importance of continuing to encourage citizens to be more participatory and remember the message that it is the responsibility of citizens to let our last km of virgin coastline, which has two protected species.
